Complete tutorial about WordPress setting to optimize your blog.

After install wordpress for blog, next step is wordpress setting to start blog. Is without setting up wordpress first, cannot start blog? No, your blog still running without setting first. WordPress setting is to optimize your blog.

Look at your wordpress admin dashboard, then go to setting menu, you’ll find 6 wordpress settings:

  • General setting
  • Writing setting
  • Reading setting
  • Discussion setting
  • Media setting
  • Permalink setting

Let’s start this wordpress setting tutorial

General setting

In general setting include:

Site title: fill your blog or site title, example: Mareta’s Blog, Qoozone, etc

Tagline: explain what your blog is about in few words, example: Blog for Blogger, WordPress Tutorial, etc

WordPress address and site address is automatically filled after wordpress installation. But you can change the site address if you want your site home page to be different from your WordPress installation directory.

Email Address: fill your email address the function is send you notification about wordpres upadate and other user notification.

Membership: If anyone can register to your site, tick this box.

New User Default Role: Choose if new user when registered, they will be a subscriber, author, contributor, editor, or administrator.

Timezone: Choose your place or city timezone

Date Format and Time Format: choose the common time and date format that you use.

Week Starts On: usually Monday is day start week.

Site Language: choose your language that you want to use, front page and backend will translate to your choosing language.

Default post category: choose what is your default post category, it is used if you did not or forget to set specify your post category (s).

Default post format: default setting is standart, use other format if you want post format be gallery, link, image, etc

Post via email: set this setting if you want post to WordPress by email.

Front page displays: WordPress is flexibel CMS, not only for blog but you can use it for other site platform: news, magazine, company profile, landing page, and others. Just set what page and post that you want to display in your front page.

Blog pages show at most: how many articles you want for your page.

Syndication feeds show the most recent and For each article in a feed: how many feed articles the most recent and summary or full text that you want to show.

Search Engine Visibility: default is uncheck, uncheck means your blog is indexing by search engine.

Discussion setting

This setting is about comment or discussion, the settings include:

Default article settings: the default are checked, attemp to notify any blogs linked to from article, allow link notification from other blog on your new article, and allow people post comment on your new articles.

Other comment setting: check the comment must fill out name and email. Check if you want your blog user must registered and logged in to comment, otherwise uncheck the box, some user comfort if they will post comment without registered and logged in. Close comment for older article, uncheck that because visitor can give you news update when your article is older. You can set the limit for the deep level of comment. Set the limitation comment per pages, if reach as your seeting, the the page will show comment page number. And older or newer comment should at the top of page.

Email me whenever: check both of the box, you will receive email when anyone post a comment and comment need moderation. It make you easy monitor your blog.

Before a comment appears, Comment Moderation, and Comment Blacklist is protect your blog from spam comments: Set it comment must manually approve. Type words in comment content, name, URL, email, or IP for moderation first. And type comment content, name, URL, email, or IP that you want to backlist.

Avatar: check show avatar, G — Suitable for all audiences, and choose avatar display based on user’s email.

Media setting

This setting is to set and organize your media files.

Image size: The sizes appear is determine the maximum dimensions in pixels when you adding an image to the Media Library: thumbnail, medium, and large file size, and you can crop thumbnail to exact dimensions.

Uploading files: check this box to organize your file uploaded into month and year based folder. It will automatically adding folder based month and year. Better than unchecked.

Permalink setting

WordPress give you option to you to choose or create a custom URL structure for your permalinks and archives.

Plain and numeric choice setting is not good for SEO, you can choose  day and name or more and name or post name or custom stucture like I do, I use this:

I include category after main domain and follow post name after category name, the format is:

http://qoozone.com/%category%/%postname%/
